lists

Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Making Lists

My tagline for my website is “Helping you be the Best you, you can be!”  and this is something I mean from my heart.  I really enjoy helping people become the best version of themselves they can be and one of the ways I do this is through teaching and mentorship.  While I help people improve their health and lifestyle, try to help people have a balanced and practical approach to the Word of God and help people with accepting their own identity the area I am most often asked to work with is organization.  Most of the areas I mentioned above I speak on in small or large groups, but organization is something I often get to do on a one-on-one basis and I love this type of mentoring/teaching!

So many people I know are intelligent, creative, and capable, but just overwhelmed and feel a sense of chaos, which then keeps them from making progress in their homes, careers, lifestyles etc.  This is where I come in.  I will meet with them and teach them how to make changes that make their world feel more peaceful and doable.  I look for the mental barriers which keep people from excelling and then look for new ways of thinking as we also apply practical steps to make change.  One of the most powerful and simple tools is making lists.

Often making a list can stop the feelings of being overwhelmed right then and there.  In our heads we think “I have so much to do and I will never get it all done” , but when we put it down on paper or the computer/phone we frequently stand back and think “oh, well…that’s not so bad, I can do that!”.  Wait! I can hear you now saying “Oh yea, well I really do have too much to do” and you might.  The next step after making the list is to separate the import and, urgent tasks from the ones that can wait.

Sometimes asking people to prioritize is too much in the beginning, so I usually suggest that they just start somewhere on the list, it doesn’t have to be in order, but just start doing the items on the list and them mark them off.  I like to use a highlighter to mark off because I can still read through it after it is marked off, but a pen or pencil is fine.  Marking off the items is an important step in feeling less overwhelmed.  While some people like check marks to the side of the list, in the beginning I suggest crossing all the way through it.  This seems to re-enforce the feeling that it is done and helps as you go along.  There is then a snowball effect of accomplishment and feeling of capability.  As they look back to the list to do the next thing they get to see the list get smaller which then makes them feel empowered to do the rest.

Sometimes people leave the things they don’t want to do for last.  If you do this I encourage to make a commitment to yourself to still do those items, but remember you only have to do them one thing at a time!  You can do it.

Below is a list of benefits of making a list:

  • Organization
  • Helps combat the urge to avoid a task
  • Helps teach the ability to prioritize
  • Relieves stress
  • Helps foster creativity, try making your list colorful, artistic, and fun!
  • Being organized in making the list, how you write it out can help with anxiety
  • Lists help us remember and keep up with the details
  • Provide focus
  • Can help expose our weak areas and allow for growth
  • Can provide accountability

While making lists is a great start don’t get too serious about it either.  Start with small lists and don’t put the “givens” on your list, meaning don’t add the things you would do anyway on the list. Remember to give yourselves a break and have a cup of coffee, take a walk, or just sit or stretch for a few minutes.

I hope this helps you towards you own goals of being amazing today!

So, how’s it going towards my personal goals to amazing?

gratitude

Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Take a Moment to be Grateful!

The OED (Oxford English Dictionary) defines gratitude as:

The quality or condition of being grateful; a warm sense of appreciation of kindness received, involving a feeling of goodwill towards the benefactor and a desire to do something in return; gratefulness.

The Webster’s Dictionary of 1828 Describes it like this:

An emotion of the heart, excited by a favor or benefit received; a sentiment of kindness or good will towards a benefactor; thankfulness. gratitude is an agreeable emotion, consisting in or accompanied with good will to a benefactor, and a disposition to make a suitable return of benefits or services, or when no return can be made, with a desire to see the benefactor prosperous and happy. gratitude is a virtue of the highest excellence, as it implies a feeling and generous heart, and a proper sense of duty.

The love of God is the sublimest gratitude

Gratitude is something we practice and strengthen the sense of, much like we build muscles in our body, the more we are grateful the easier it is to be grateful.  Below are just a few benefits of a grateful heart.  Take a minute today to think of what you are grateful for.

Benefits of Gratefulness:

  • Grateful people tend to experience fewer aches and pains
  • Tend to take better care of themselves leading to better over all health
  • Sleep better
  • Are happier people
  • Improved self esteem
  • Are more optomistic
  • Less materialistic
  • Improved mental strength
  • Reduced stress levels
  • More resilient
  • More empathetic
  • Healthier marriages
  • Increased energy levels

Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Rejecting Fear!

Fear is a thief and liar, to reach your amazing you must conquer fear.  I don’t mean the kind of fear you feel when you see a bear running towards you, the fear you feel when a car pulls into your lane or when you sense you are in danger.  That kind of fear is the fear we are meant to have and signals our bodies fight or flight response.  That is a good thing, it protects us.  I’m talking about a different kind of fear that we all deal with on some level.  The fear of what may be.

The fear of what may be is a thought that looks like a trailer to a movie, one in which you wrote and star in and if this was Star Trek, you’d be wearing the red shirt!  Meaning it doesn’t go well for you!  This is the fear that asks things like “What if ___happens?” or “What if ____doesn’t happen?”.   This type of fear leads us into imaginary situations where unpleasant things occur.  Things like embarrassment, death, accident, loss, and destruction.  These are usually the (imagined) outcome of this type of fear and as a result we often quit.

False Evidence Appearing Real, is one way I heard it put, in other words a lie! You have a choice to make, one that takes courage!  Courage is not the absence of fear, it is standing firm in the face of fear!  If there were no fear, courage would not be needed.

Years ago I heard a story that made this very real to me.  I was at church and the person speaking said someone came to her filled with fear that her child would die.  This woman said to the speaker that she did not have the grace to handle this!  She even felt that God had let her down because he was not giving her the grace she needed.  The speaker said “and he won’t either!”  “God will not give you grace for your imagined suffering because you don’t need it.   What he will do is help you overcome your fear”.  To me this was an amazing truth.  I was blown away realizing that I too had languished in my imagined suffering and as a result I was missing my own destiny!  It changed my thinking and my actions.  Do I still have unfounded fears? Of course I do, but now I know what to do with them.  As you walk through this 100 Days to Amazing with me I hope you will let go of your imagined sufferings, your fear and be courageous and bold, then you will be free to be amazing!

The next time you see someone who you admire because they seem so confident and brave remember that it is only because they faced their fears and proved them wrong and that you can too!  I also want to take a minute to say that if you paralyzed by the stories you have created for your fears I encourage you be brave and talk to someone.  There is no shame in seeing a counselor or sharing with a friend and the truth is sometimes just saying our fears out loud to someone else exposes them for what they are to us as we say them!

Fear, a series of haiku

By Lisa Wright Burbach

Feelings which seem real

Flitting through my mind each day

Follow me they say

*

Even now I hear

Ever droning in my ear

Evil is its plan

*

 Adjusting my destiny

Attempting to stop my dream

A lie, a choice to be made

*

Resist it I shall

Rob me no more fear, you thief!

Rejoice, I am free!

So, how’s it going towards my personal goals to amazing?

Goal one, my Shaklee Business: Best laid plans of mice and men often go awry so the saying goes. I’m afraid I had something unexpected come up yesterday and was away for most of the day.  It will still be disorganized on Monday and will wait for me.

Goal two, my health and fitness:  While I was waylaid unexpectedly yesterday I was able to keep a focus on eating well.  The idea being that I’m making a lifestyle change, meaning I just move and eat well because it is what I do.  For now, though I still have to give myself reminders.

For the weekend my focus is on my amazing family, but I will still help people feel better and of course Strip and Shake daily.

read a bookToday’s tip for Amazingness:

Build your Brain! Read a Book.

Technology is wonderful, as a technogeek I am 100% for technology, but I’ve decided to join the “Slow Reading” movement.  Like the “Slow Food” movement it is a call back to older, slower, time tested ways. The Slow Reading movement encourages reading physical books and reading the entire book.  If you decided to give it a try you may find that you can no longer make it through an entire book, but don’t be discouraged just press on through and you will find the joy of reading again.

Our brains are amazing machines with the ability to adapt and studies are showing that our brains are making fascinating changes and new neural pathways as a result of electronic devices, electronic media, and social apps. While the adaptations are beneficial for the floods of information we come across daily through the internet, our phones, tablets etc. it is having a detrimental effect on our way of thinking, processing, and retaining of information.

The process we use to assimilate information on the web, apps, etc. is a process of skimming.  We no longer read in a typical left to right manner, but in a series of columns across the page or in shape of an F; across the top, down, across.  The result is the ability to get the gist of a great deal of data, but we lose a greater level of comprehension, reduce our vocabulary and even negatively impact our abilities to empathize and build deeper relationships!

Just like we help ourselves become healthier through proper eating, exercise, socialization, meditation and prayer we can make our brains healthier too through things like disconnecting from our devices from time to time, doing crossword puzzles, de-stressing, and reading either a book or ebook word for wore, cover to cover.  While ebooks are electronic there are still benefits to reading a book through an e-reader, though most encourage physical books.

While I am not calling for some sort of Luddite uprising and encouraging we toss all of our electronic devices I am encouraging you that part of being the best you, you can be and becoming amazing is to pull back from time to time, curl up with a good book, breathe, and read! Your brain will thank you.

Here are some great reasons to read a physical book, textbook, magazine etc.:

  • Studies show greater retention of the information
  • Increased memory function as we age
  • Evidence of stress reduction
  • Improved analytical and reasoning skills
  • Improved vocabulary
  • Improved focus and concentration
  • Increased productivity – not counting the time we get totally lost in a good book!
  • Greater concentration
  • Improves listening skills

Be amazing today one step at a time!

Shaklee and the brain: Shaklee has spent years researching the brain and has developed a proprietary product called MindWorks, it is a revolutionary program that provides nutritional support + brain training software.  MindWorks key nutrients have been shown in three clinical studies and dozens of laboratory studies to immediately enhance mental sharpness and focus and protect against age-related mental decline.*  And a portion of the proceeds from each bottle of MindWorks purchased will be donated to fund brain health research.

So, how’s it going towards my personal goals to amazing?

Goal one, my Shaklee Business: Today is a a catch up day for me. Organization is key and today I am planning to catch up on all of my emails and make a written plan for next week.  I also hope to introduce the new Shaklee Integrative Wellness Plan to a couple of people today.

Goal two, my health and fitness:  Regarding my health goals I really need to be more intentional and find that just plain laziness is getting in my way.  Today I am setting the goal of keeping the end prize in mind and always looking at the bigger picture.  Yesterday was baby play day, but I did focus on eating well.

Today I will organize, plan, workout using the Shaklee 180 fitness guide, help people feel better and of course Strip and Shake daily.

 amazing 10Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Remembering the Environment, but Keeping it Real

Every one has a view on the environment. Some are militant in their approach and some are satisfied with simply recycling, but we all can play a part and work together.

The bottom line is this, the Earth, is our home and we have a responsibility to care for it; nurture it and it will nurture us.  Did you know that pollution on the other side of the world can alter the weather where you are? Or that pollution shortens life spans, increase cardiovascular risk, can cause asthma, and more?  BUT, did you know that just one tree can absorb one ton of carbon monoxide or produces 260 pounds of oxygen? What about electricity?  Conserving electricity can result in cleaner water, fewer greenhouse gases and cleaner air.  Then there is liter, oil spills, traffic emissions, the list goes on and each one causing damage!  What we do matters both negatively and positively.

We can picket, protest, fight, and just be plain mean about environmental issues.  We can also close our eyes and pretend it is all fine and ignore the issues or we can keep it real and find balance.  Everyone can do something and we will be amazing together. Let’s be friends! We can all agree that our environment is important, and really it is our home, so let’s be good to it!

Here are some small things we can all do to make a big difference:

  • Turn off your computer at night
  • Recycle
  • Adjust your thermostat
  • Walk or bike
  • Shop with reusable bags
  • Buy locally
  • User reusable water bottles
  • Meatless Monday
  • Plant a tree

For other great ideas try Pinterest under “going green”, but beware it can be a fun experience, but a time vortex!

Be amazing today one step at a time!

Shaklee and the environment:At Shaklee, we’re part of a movement to make people and the planet healthier. Inspired by the visionary works of 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai and her Green Belt Movement, Shaklee began a tree-planting campaign across the United States and Canada on Earth Day 2006, encouraging the company’s 750,000 Members and Distributors to organize tree-planting events at the grassroots level in their respective communities.” Statement from Shaklee Corporate.  We have since planted over 1 million trees and the World Health Organization has been inspired by Shaklee and continued this pursuit.

I am so proud to be part of Shaklee not only because of the stringent testing, 100,000 quality tests per year done on the raw materials and the finished product to make sure that every product is green, safe, and effective, nor the massive amounts of scientific research, but also because of Shaklee’s commitment to the environment.  Shaklee was the first company in the world to be Climate Neutral Certified to offset 100% of carbon emissions, thus leaving a zero footprint! Shaklee was one of the first company’s to remove phosphates from laundry detergent and that was back in the 70’s!  All of this began with Dr. Forrest Shaklee who believed that nature was here to help us and we should help nature. One of my favorite quotes by him is “All I did was listen to nature and pass the word along”. To learn more about Shaklee and the environment click here.

So, how’s it going towards my personal goals to amazing?

Goal one, my Shaklee Business: One of the biggest changes for me is a change in my thinking.  It is hard to learn to go from thinking of my business as “this little thing I do” to “This is what I do, I own it”.  Today I spent some time trying to make this paradigm shift.   I also spent time in my office and designed a business card.

Goal two, my health and fitness:  I am really enjoying exercise more as just a natural part of my day and I had a great day eating the rainbow, as they say.  It feels good.

Today I will play with grandbabies, do some yoga, help people feel better and of course Strip and Shake daily.

Today’s tip for Amazingingess: Come to the Table!

There is something about coming together around a meal that knits us together.  If you think about it, where do people often hang out in your house?  Is it the kitchen?   It may not be.  As a society we have pulled away from the community table and it is sad and has negative consequences on both society, family, and our health.

You may not like to cook or might not be the greatest chef, but it doesn’t mean  you can’t bring life back to the table.  You don’t need fancy food, but I find that setting the table helps.  I was once told to use my china for my family and not to save it for “company” because there would be no more important person at my table than my spouse, or my kids.  This was great advice and over the years we have had fine meals and pb & Jelly on china just to make sitting down together special. I like to use my china for anyone who sits at my table.  Even if you use paper plates try setting the table with the paper plate, silverware or plastic, and a napkin and try putting a glass with just a few things from your yard, like blossoms or even twigs as a center piece and you will find that it automatically feels different.  The key is making the table inviting.  If you have a family and set the table you may be surprised to see they actually sit down!

Going back to the “Blue Zones” book by Dan Buettner we discovered that one of the keys to longevity is a sense of community; a social bond. The dinner table is a great place to build community, both at home and is the greater sense of community. Make the kitchen a place to hang out again!

Did you know that kids who eat at the table with their family have greater vocabularies, do better in school, have a lower percentage of health issues both medical and psychological, have a lower rate of obesity, and also have lower rates of smoking, binge drinking, and drug use.  Amazing! I know our busy schedules can make it a challenge, but look at the gain!  Yet another reason to come to the table!

Most of the rest of the world excels at community and meals.  In some countries people come home for a 2-3 hour lunch which involves good food and good conversation!  What a great way to be healthy, just hang out with friends and family!  Mealtimes with friends and those in our community is just as important as with our family. I find that meal time is a wonderful relationship building time.  We laugh, cry, share our hearts, catch up with each other, solve problems, teach, mentor, help and the list goes on.  Make a rule that what is said at the table stays at the table and make it a safe and open place.

Invite some friends over, set the table, and slow down.  Savor the meal and savor the moment!

Salud, To your health!

So, how’s it going towards my personal goals to amazing?

Goal one, my Shaklee Business: Yesterday was a wonderful day watching the grandbabies! One is 8 12 months old and crawling and the other is almost 3!  This means we didn’t stop all day!  I didn’t have much time to work on Shaklee, but wore my t-shirt for my errands that needed to be handled at the end of the day.  Tuesday and Thursdays will be grandbaby days and I will need to be especially dedicated on the other days of the week.  My goal is to have my Facebook party set up by Friday!

Goal two, my health and fitness:  Knowing that I was going to be with the kids yesterday I tried to plan ahead and just took a Life Shake with me and a snack bar.  I filled in with a healthy snack when I got home and a balanced dinner.  My goal today is to exercise 30-60 minutes and practice Mindful Eating and of course, I will Strip and Shake daily and Blog.

day 6Sometimes You Just Need to Laugh

Laughter is medicine available to us with no adverse reactions!  I recommend laughing with a friend!  You may not be able to stop!

Here are some quick facts about laughter:

  • Relaxes your muscles
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Produces endorphins, your body’s natural pain killers
  • Improves sleep
  • Can help blood pressure
  • Eases digestion
  • Helps cognitive function
  • Helps provide a sense of well being
  • Can enhance your creativity
  • Increase infection fighting antibodies
  • Can reduce stress

Some experts recommend daily laughter and suggest you consider it as important as getting your daily servings of vegetables.   With the benefits above what do you have to lose?  A thread we are seeing through the Journey to Amazing is the importance of a good social group, so grab your friends and start laughing.

Here is a laugh to get you started, a re-post:  My Relationship with Hair Color; Our Messy Break-up!

But you’ll look Old!!!  If you look old I’ll look old – said my friends who for my 40th birthday took me to have my hair colored; and I liked it.  I tossed my hair back and forth and thought Yes, I look good! buuuttt. I knew! I kneeeww, I knew at the time that I was not the kind of girl who could have a long term relationship with hair color.

It just wasn’t going to work.  I knew ours was not a true, lasting love, but merely a vain fling…..Read More

So, how’s it going?

Goal one, my Shaklee Business: Monday was a great day, I was able to follow up with my leads and have started mapping out my Facebook party.  The best was that my husband came home and told me he was so excited about Shaklee and just wanted to get out there and tell people how wonderful it is!  Sweeeet!

Goal two, my health and fitness:  If the goal is to move a lot then I did! I spent most of the day cleaning house and still got it some business hours and a good workout and dinner on the table on time.  It was a very satisfying day.  Today I am watching grandbabies, this in itself may be a work out!  I will slip in some yoga too and of course, I will Strip and Shake daily and Blog.
