Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Allow me to Introduce Myself

And a word of encouragement to be the best you, you can be!

Hello reader,

Forgive me, we should have had proper introductions in the beginning.  Today I will back up and take a minute to tell you a little about myself. In the comments section I’d love to hear about you!  Introduce yourself in the comments area below. The link to leave a comment is in the small bluish box at the bottom of this blog post.

I live in North Carolina, but was born and bred in Virginia and still consider myself to be a Virginian!  I have been married almost 4 years to the kindest, most wonderful man and together we have a blended family of 5 kids, 1 daughter-in-law (which makes us have 6 kids!) and 2 grandchildren and life is good.  My husband, Van is very similar to me and we get to travel on  the same journey together always learning. He likes to say that if you learn something new today it was a good day! I agree!

I am also on the same journey that you are on, one of discovering myself; this is a life long journey.  Like me, I’m sure you discover that you learn new things, mature, grow, mess up, try again and that you are never finished.  How exciting! It means we never have to settle and always have the chance to be the best version of ourselves, even if it takes a lifetime to get there.

I love learning, reading, family, friends, being creative, and being analytical.  I don’t believe I have to be either left brained or right brained, but that I can be whole brained and I love it! (hint, there will be a future blog on right and left brain.)  Here are a few things about me:

  • I can play the flute and if I can hum the song in my head I can play it-pretty cool huh? but almost never pick it up anymore, though I’m not ready to give it up and should pick it up often
  • I do watercolor
  • I love balancing numbers and math play
  • I have a Shaklee business and love it most because I can help people
  • I love logic problems and do them to unwind sometimes
  • I am obnoxiously curious
  • I enjoy writing
  • I love to cook
  • It gives me great pleasure to help others succeed.  Even if no one knows I was involved.  With that I would much rather be the #2 person than the lead.  I can make you look great all day, but don’t want the attention
  • I love research with a passion
  • I love technology
  • I teach women’s bible study and sometimes teach in larger groups
  • I teach because I am passionate for truth and understanding and like to help people see things in a way they can understand so that they can get excited too
  • My faith is central to my life and decisions, though it is not usually center of this blog, knowing God intimately through his son Jesus is what makes my life tick
  • Even though God is the center of my life it does not mean I only love people who believe the way I do.  I believe God is love and love is not just for those how happen to be just like us.  After all, I really like you even when you being you is different from me being me
  • I am a amateur photographer
  • I love DIY
  • I consider myself to be part Martha Stewart Living and part Popular Science
  • I love science fiction
  • I love natural, green, earthy stuff.  Meaning I’m kinda crunchy
  • I love a good cozy mystery
  • I love to be outside every possible minute that I can
  • My love for learning means this list could go on forever and in the interest of your time and for consideration of you I will stop here.

Now that you know a little about me, let’s talk about you!  Are you investing in  yourself?  Are you growing and become more you every day? Do you know that you are worth it?

The quote above by St. Catherine of Siena is wonderful.  I put it there not to say I set the world on fire, but that as we each do the things we are meant to do, do the things that we excel at and quit trying to be someone else we will set the world on fire.  We do so because everyone would be the best version of themselves working together like a well oiled clock!  It would be awesome.  While as a society I don’t expect it to work that way exactly I’m sure we can each do our part and today I want to encourage you to be the best you, you can be and set the world on fire!  I believe in you!

What the 100 Days is about:

I was at the Shaklee Global Conference August 12-16th and we were challenged to 100 Days of Amazing with the question of what could we accomplish in 100 days if we really tried?  I was inspired by the challenge, both as a business builder who wants to grow my business in 100 days and as an individual!  What could I do in 100 days? This blog is a journey, an exercise in learning ways to be the best me, I can be and to help you be the best you, you can be while I’m at it!

Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Eating out Tips

I love to make healthy meals! I especially love to make meals that seem decadent and wait until my guests moan about blowing their diets and then tell them how their meal only seemed fattening!  “Really!!”  they say! Yes really!! “No way!”  “Yep!”  This is fun.  I think that if you honor the ingredients and bring out the natural flavors you can easily keep the dishes lower in sodium and fats and full of all the good stuff and flavor.

Eating out is the real problem.  It is unlikely the chef is looking to surprise me and will come to the table to tell me I have been fooled as I eat my guilty pleasures only to find they were HEALTHY! No, as a matter of fact it is more likely I have chosen what seemed to be a healthy dish only to plug it into my food app and find it was outrageous. What can we do?  Below are a few tips to help us stay on track when eating out.
  • If time allows look at menus online and choose a restaurant with meals you feel fit your dietary needs or goals
  • Try to go out to eat before you are famished
  • Use the fitness app on your smart phone.  I plug my choices into myfitnesspal and compare, but there are many great apps available
  • Restaurant meals are often the size or 2 or more portions.  Try asking for a take out box at the beginning of the meal and put half or more in the box before you take the first bit.
  • Choose steamed, broiled, and baked over fried
  • Watch the salad dressing, this is where all the calories are.  Try just squeezing lemon or lime on your salad or dilute your dressing with some milk.
  • Choose vegetables as a side over fries or onion rings
  • Watch the sauces.  Sauces can really amp up the fats, sodium, and calories
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for special preparation.  Some restaurants offer a “guilt free” option.  It doesn’t hurt to ask
  • Consider skipping the bread or chip basket or decide to only allow your self a certain amount and stick to it.
  • Make eating out a treat not a habit.  This helps save money as well as calories
  • Try ordering an appetizer as your main meal
  • Split the meal
  • Enjoy yourself, do your best and don’t shame yourself
  • Sometimes you have to splurge.  It’s OK to have eat the cream sauces, fried foods, and desserts if it is an occasional thing. If you deny yourself completely you will set yourself up to fail

curiosity

Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Curiosity

I am a naturally inquisitive person, by naturally I mean obnoxiously!  I just neeeeeeeed to know, to understand, to see.  I drive my friends crazy!  Why is …..?  What do you think….?  Will we……?  How do they……?  I once took a course where the lecturer would say “Any questions….Lisa?” “Why yes, thank you for asking!”  I find I am not very happy if I am not learning new things and it turns out I’m not the only one.  Science has found that curiosity activates the reward center of our brains which uses the neurotransmitter Dopamine, sort of a happiness neurotransmitter.  In addition to activating the “reward center” of our brain activity levels in the hippocampus region of the brain rise, which is responsible for memory.

Charan Ranganath, a psychologist at the University of California and his team studied our brains when curious and discovered that when we are curious we learn better and remember more.  Not only do we remember the things we were interested in, but we remember the boring things too!  If our curiosity was piqued at the beginning the changes in our brain allow us to retain information that comes later even if it doesn’t matter to us.  Ranganath also says “The dopamine also seems to play a role in enhancing the connections between cells that are involved in learning.”  So, not only do we learn better, remember more, but it makes us happy!

Research into curiosity is in its infancy, but the studies and results so far are fascinating.  Here are a few more benefits researchers have found:

  • Causes us to remember more
  • May protect against late stage Alzheimer’s
  • Curious people tend to be happier
  • Build better relationships.  Being curious and asking questions is part of building intimacy and getting to know one another as well as showing genuine interest to the other person
  • Leads to a general open mindedness
  • Curious people tend to be adaptable, because they are open to the fact that new information could change their view and behavior
  • Being curious may help alleviate feelings of anxiety.  Studies are showing that the curiosity over rides the anxiety, meaning we press through for the sake of curiosity even though we are anxious
  • Curiosity is the door to learning.  As we mentioned before the Hippocamupus activities rise allowing us to remember more, thus allowing learning to be virtually limitless.
  • Curiosity just may make you smarter!  The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2002 found a direct correlation between curiosity and intelligence and studies have shown curious adults are more analytical and have better problem solving skills.  Einstein once said “I have no special talent, I am only passionately curious” which is an understatement of his IQ, but science says he is onto something there.

The next time you have to speak to a group or teach try piquing their curiosity at the beginning and see how much they remember!  As for yourself, always keep a mind that is willing and wants to learn and have the attitude that there is always something new to be learned.

It seems you can teach an old dog new tricks and curiosity, in reality, does not kill the cat!  Happy curiosity!

polite

Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Being Polite – A Lost Skill

There is something to be said for being yourself and being comfortable in your own skin, but this does not, nor should not mean we forget basic skills of politeness also know as our manners.   You may think it is not important, but when someone is rude to you I’m sure you notice and so do they.  You don’t want to be the rude one!

Being polite to another person is a sign of respect to the other as well as a reflection of you.  It is important to realize that being fake and being polite are entirely different things when we learn to show respect with a genuine heart even if the others seems to deserve no respect. With a little practice you can develop the skill of politeness.

Here are a few basic guidelines:

  • Say Thank you – It seems that in today’s world many don’t feel the need to say thank you because they feel that the other person was supposed to do whatever it is they did and therefore doesn’t deserve to be thanked.  This isn’t true.  We say “Thank you” out of appreciation and respect and if you don’t appreciate it start there!  If you are a boss, parent, leader etc.  This is a must!
  • Say Please – Remember you are grateful for the help of others, saying please lets them feel it matters
  • Say No Thank you-  Saying “No, Thank you” can help you sound more appreciative as well as non-combative
  • Let others go first
  • Let ladies and elderly go first
  • Don’t eat until everyone is seated and the host has has taken the first bite
  • Do not make bodily noises in front of others- it’s just rude
  • Watch your language – don’t tell inappropriate jokes, use racial slurs, or offensive language in public
  • Take the time to listen
  • Be punctual – the other person’s time is valuable too
  • Take note and remember things about the person you are speaking to, it shows you are interested and care

These just begin to scratch the surface.  Try thinking of other rules of politeness, the act of remembering make help you put them in practice.

For a great read and listen check out NPR’s story on Washington’s Guide to Civility and see how many still apply!

Here are a few quotes about politeness that I thought were thought provoking.

  • There’s no chivalry in culture any more. Sometimes you meet someone who everyone says is polite and you’re like, ‘Wow,’ but then it’s like, ‘Hang on, isn’t everyone supposed to be polite?’ – will.i.am (yes, really- I’m quoting Will.I.Am!)
  • Respect for ourselves guides our morals, respect for others guides our manners. – Laurence Sterne
  • Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use. – Emily Post
  • Good manners sometimes means simply putting up with other people’s bad manners. – H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
  • A man’s manners are a mirror in which he shows his portrait. – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
  • I think the thing I miss most in our age is our manners. It sounds so old-fashioned in a way. But even bad people had good manners in the old days, and manners hold a community together, and manners hold a family together; in a way, they hold the world together. – Nancy Friday
  • Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot. – Clarence Thomas
  • The unkindness of your family makes you astonished to find friendship elsewhere. – Sense and Sensibility

Regarding the quote in the  picture above “Being polite these days is so rare it is often confused with flirting”, how sad yet true.  Mere kindness should be the basics we all carry, do not let it become extinct, but fuel it so that all would think ours is a flirtatious society!

Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Put on Makeup You’ll Feel Better

Or Ditch those sweatpants Friend!

Or Sometimes we Change from the Outside In!

When I was feeling kind of blue or a little under the weather my mother (Nancy-I have two.) used to tell me “Put some makeup on, you’ll feel better.”  and surprisingly it worked!  It wasn’t magical makeup that healed my colds or some sort of Zoloft like foundation or lipstick, it was the act of putting a little care into myself and giving concern to my outward appearance that actually did lift my mood and make me feel a little better.

Let’s talk about those sweatpants, especially those of you who work from home or in the home!  They are great, I agree.  To be honest I have a pair on now.  Well OK, to be toootally honest I have a pair of orange and black horizontal striped slick base layer pants on; I know! Awesome right?  But, it is Saturday and cool and rainy; it is allowed.  Now, as I was saying let’s talk about those sweatpants.  It is fine to come home and relax and put on “soft clothes”, but how we dress can impact how we think and how we feel about ourselves.  If you work from home try putting clothes on that you wouldn’t mind talking to a client in and see how it impacts your work.
Here are a few reasons it matters to fix yourself up a little
  • Self image. Research shows that if we dress all schlumpy and frumpy we often feel that way.  You can buy comfortable clothes that still look nice and/or professional.
  • It is symbolic.  To many of us the style of dress we see means something like relaxation, professional, medical etc.  Dressing for what you represent can be  important psychologically to your work.
  • Productivity.  Some studies show that dressing up for work actually plays a role in how you perceive your work and therefore your productivity levels.  When we are in our sweats, PJs etc. we often take our time because it feels like a day off.
  • The client or future client. If you are working from home and want to run out for a quick trip it is tempting to leave on the sweats, but what if you run into a client or meet a potential client?  Research shows that not only does your attitude change by how you are dressed, but so does theirs.

Other ways that our outside can change our inside

  • Smile it makes you feel better and others!  Try answering the phone with a smile or smiling before you speak.  I love the quote above from Phyllis Diller “A Smile is a curve that set’s everything straight”.  Smiling is powerful!
  • Offer to help even when you don’t feel like it.  In the end you may find that you enjoyed yourself and your heart became more eager to serve.
  • Gratitude. Find something genuine to praise someone about the next time you are with someone you have difficulty with.  Even if you don’t say it out loud, looking for one good thing can change your attitude which in turn could change theirs. You may also find you gain empathy and understanding.
  • Be humble.  There is a lot to be said for being teachable, in other words be willing to listen and learn from others and don’t think you know it all and you are the best.  As Qui-Gon Jin’s said in Star Wars “There’s always a bigger fish”.

I’ve always heard “fake it till you make it”, but there is more to it than that.  It is important to be genuine and honest and hopefully you have people in your life to whom you can open up with, but sometimes putting on the right clothes, a smile, a little makeup etc. can help push us in the right direction.  It is OK to compromise too.  The Flylady who teaches how to be organized in your home, says to start the day with your shoes on for this same reason.  I don’t, I may put a little makeup on and a decent outfit, but I go barefoot while I work, It is my compromise.  I put the shoes on when I go out, or at least when I go out of my own yard, well…neighborhood.  What I’m saying is that you should be able to tell where the line is, don’t get uptight about it, but put a little extra care into your dress, attitude, and self and watch the amazing transformation!

The other message in today’s blog is that you are worth putting a little effort into.  You are valuable, beautiful/handsome, you are worth it!!  Care for yourself and love on yourself as part of your journey to amazing!

Please note however, clearly, writing a blog should be done in red and black stripy, slicky pants!  SMILE!

Today’s tip for Amazingness:

A Little Love Story

One day I was sitting outside drinking my cup of coffee surrounded by trees and a beautiful day when my life changed.  I had been a single mom for 8 years and my kids and I were in a good place.  My eldest had just left for college and my youngest and I were enjoying just hanging out.  Life was good.  Then it got better!

While I was sitting there my phone rang and it was a friend of mine who simply said “Hey, This guy has 2 tickets for a concert and I gave him your number.  You are going to say yes and you’re going to be nice.  Bye” and with that she hung up the phone!  10 minutes later my phone rang again, the calm coffee moment was over as I had just spent the last 10 minutes freaking out and walking in circles in my back yard talking to no one!  I managed to calmly (I feel) answer the phone.  After an awkward conversation the date was set, I had said “Yes”.  Now I had to be nice!

Our date was lovely. You should know that I am 13 years younger than my husband and in the world of pop culture this is a big deal! Meaning, I had never heard of Gordon Lightfoot and had to Google him before the date.  In truth I did recognize a few songs after the fact.  OOOOHHH,  and I may have made a faux pas when Van asked me what I thought of John Denver.  I know who he is!!! BUUT, at that moment all I could think of was the Muppets.  I said “Oh, he is the guy that sang with Kermit, right?”  “It’s not easy being green lal lalal…” eh-hem.  Uhhhh,  he still asked me out again!  At the end of the date I asked him if he would tell my friend that I had indeed been nice.  He replied with a total line “Well, I think I’ll have to see you more to decide, first”.  A line right?  I knew it and I pride myself on not being a typical girl prone to giggles etc., except I did.  “heee, heee hee” as I brushed my hair from my face! OHHH MYY GGOOOSSH, what was thattt!!!  It was over, I was hooked.  There it was for all to see!

From that date on he slipped into my heart and all my secret places as if he had always been there.  He became my best friend, my confidant, my one true love, and a partner in all of life!   He is now my wonderful husband!

Like any couple we had baggage and a history and yet it was so easy to walk it all out together.  Partners! We each brought even deeper healing to each other’s hearts than we had achieved on our own. It has been tremendous!

At our wedding my brother and his wife sang “The Day Before You” by Rascal Flats, you can listen to it here.  It sums up our feelings for each other perfectly!  And my heart sings this verse “Oh, but Heaven knows those years without you were shaping my heart for the that day I found you. If you’re the reason for all that I’ve been through
Then I’m thankful for the day before you.”!  True story!

One of the best parts of our relationship is not only being able to completely be accepted as ourselves, but to be more of ourselves than even we knew we could be.  I believe it is our jobs as spouses to help the other be all they were meant to be, even when they don’t see it.  I believe this is our job in all relationships, to help each other be the best version of ourselves we can be!  That is amazing!

I’d like to share our wedding vows with you today as part of sharing our little love story!

Van:  God has named you his Daughter Full of Grace, and so you are to me.  Through you, I have experienced more of God’s grace than ever before in my life.  You are a safe haven, a place of peace, where I have found the freedom to be more my true self than I have ever been.  You speak truth to me in love better than anyone, always full of grace and encouragement.  You inspire me to be a better me than I have ever been, and you always remind me who I am in Jesus Christ.

I thank God for you, God’s Daughter Full of Grace, and by his grace, I will be the Son of God’s Heart to you.  I vow to be true to you, to be honest with you, and to speak truth to you in love.  I purpose in my heart to love you with his love, to pursue your heart more deeply every day, to reveal God’s heart toward you in all that I say or do, and to remind you always of who you are in Jesus Christ.

Being with you is like coming home and going on a great adventure at the same time.  I look forward to being at home with you, day in and day out, through joys and sorrows and even through the mundane.  I also look forward to the adventure of living life with you, of taking each step together as God gives us light, and trusting him with the future.  I look forward to laughing with you, crying with you, and praying with you.  Most of all, I look forward to just being with you.

I love you, Lisa, and in Jesus Christ, I give myself to you: all that I am, all that I have, and all that God has called me to be.  I am yours.

Lisa: There are secret places in our hearts where our imaginations thrive and our hopes and dreams are born. from the moment I met you, you walked into these places with me as if you had always been there, you belong.  You came into my world and your hopes and dreams made my hopes and dreams brighter and more wonderful, your imagination made mine more alive, you have loved the true me, the secret me, as a result I am more of who I am meant to be. I am more of who I am truly called to be.

I cannot promise to love, laugh, share, hope, and dream perfectly.  I will never be the perfect wife, but I promise to love you for you, to hope to see you be more of yourself than even you knew existed.  To love all you are called to be and love you in the process.  I promise to hope for you, respect you, cherish you, imagine with you, to help you be the man God has called you to be, to be with you and to try again when I fail.
My tender gift from God, simply put-With you and to you, I belong.
Thanks for listening to our story!

100 Days to Amazing!  You can do amazing things. I believe you can; you believe you can too!

Thanks for joining me on this journey!

My Journey to 100 Days to Amazing-38

forgiveness

Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Forgiveness

“Will you forgive me?” No, what you did was wrong and you don’t deserve it”.  Have you ever been told that?  Have you ever said that?  It is hurtful to bet told that and harmful to hold that kind of attitude, but a person with helpful boundaries, when told “no, I will not forgive you” can learn to say to themselves “That is their issue and I choose to let it go”.  It will still hurt a little, but the ownership lies with the person who refuses to forgive.   The person who chooses not to forgive may carry the consequences of that decision for the rest of their lives!  Forgiveness frees the forgiver!

I really like this definition of forgiveness by  Karen Swartz, M.D., director of the Mood Disorders Adult Consultation Clinic at The Johns Hopkins Hospital “It is an active process in which you make a conscious decision to let go of negative feelings whether the person deserves it or not”.  Forgiveness doesn’t let the other person off the hook, excuse wrong behavior, deny the other’s responsibility, minimize or deny the offense it means that you will not hold onto resentment, carry thoughts of revenge, ruminate on the wrong doing, etc. Forgiveness is a peace you offer to yourself and in turn may bring peace in the relationship you are dealing with.

It is important to recognize we don’t really forget, we just don’t hold it against someone and keeping yourself safe is not unforgiveness it is a healthy boundary!  It is possible to keep a distance or set a boundary and still forgive!  It is also important to pull yourself out of an abusive situation if you are in one.  Forgiveness does not mean you allow yourself to continue to be mistreated.  If you struggle with putting yourself in unhealthy situations I highly recommend the book “Boundaries” by Cloud and Townsend and that you seek out a safe person to help you change this pattern in your life.

What are the benefits of forgiveness?

  • We may gain compassion and empathy towards another
  • Build stronger relationships –  No deep relationship is without tension, we just have to work past it
  • Greater psychological health
  • Greater physical health
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower stress
  • Stronger immune system
  • Greater heart health
  • Have an overall healthier outlook on life
  • More satisfied in life
  • Improve cholesterol levels
  • Improved sleep
  • Reduce pain
  • Reduce anxiety levels

Some people are just more naturally forgiving by nature, but if you aren’t you can learn.  Like anything it just takes practice.  One key is recognizing the other person does not need to apologize or say “I’m sorry” for you to forgive them.  As a matter of fact studies show that such conditional forgiveness does not reap the same benefits that unconditional forgiveness does.  “I’m sorry” helps relationally, but is not necessary for forgiveness.

Lastly, you must also learn to forgive yourself!  If another person talked about you the way you do, you would be up in arms!  Let yourself off the hook!  Studies have found one of the ways to help you forgive yourself is by humbling yourself and asking for forgiveness from others when you have wronged them.   When my children were growing up I insisted that they not just say “I’m sorry”, which could often be flippant.  They had to say “I’m sorry for ________, will you forgive me”.  Then, if the other person said no I told my children it was OK, give them time they had, after all been wrong.  I then reminded them they had done the right thing by taking ownership of their actions and it would usually work out in the end.

In your journey towards amazing I give you the homework assignment of practicing forgiveness.  Practice forgiving yourself and others.  If you have been one who has a lifetime of holding grudges it may take a while and may require the help of a good counselor, but the freedom you will feel is worth it!  If you afraid that forgiving will be too painful and that pain will take you over I want to encourage you.  You will make it, it will not take you over.  It may hurt to face the wrongs that have been done against you, but the freedom and health you gain from forgiveness is less painful than the pain you carry every single day through unforgiveness!  As the song says “Letttt iitt gooooooo”!

I Leave you with this thought “You will know that forgiveness has begun when you recall those who hurt you and feel the power to wish them well.” –Lewis B. Smedes author, theologian, ethicist.
