 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Non-Toxic Furniture Polish

When I was growing up one of my weekly jobs was to do the dusting! I hated it! Then I grew up and realized I hate dust even more!  Like many people I started out cleaning with whatever the most poplar cleaning products on the market were and had no idea that these items were toxic to my home, my family, and me!  I already mentioned this quote in a previous blog post, but it is worth mentioning again “According to a 15-year study presented at the Toronto Indoor Air Conference, women who work at home have a 54% higher death rate from cancer than those who work away from home.  The study concluded that this was a direct result of the increased exposure to toxic chemicals, many of which are found in common household products.”

Well there you go!  Off the hook…no more housework!! Well, OK I guess that isn’t true, but there are things we can do to change our environment and one of those things is to use non-toxic cleaners.

A few years ago I learned about the fact that our homes are one of the most toxic places we go to in our day and decided to make some changes.  I have tried a variety of “green” products only to find out that some weren’t so green as they claimed and I’ve tried making my own cleaning products.  In the end I landed with Shaklee and love it!  my main cleaning product is Basic H2, a super-safe, very powerful, all purpose cleaner and only .15¢ per bottle for the all purpose formulation (that is including the bottle,  and shipping-check out this Basic H2 Math).  I clean my walls, counters, sticky stuff, my windows, my floors, everything with it.  It is fine to use on furniture as is, but them my friend told me a little secret to make my furniture shine, like my former golden liquid.

  • 1 bottle of either the window formulation of Basic H2 (2 drops to 16 ounces of water) or the all-purpose formulation (1/4 tsp to 16 ounces of water)
  • 12 drops of Shakleebaby Massage Oil (which I recommend you keep on hand for dry winter skin and shaving anyway! Baby yourself)

Mix together and shake before each use and voila, non-toxic furniture polish!

If you don’t use Shaklee I am guessing that you can adapt the recipe to fit your current non-toxic cleaner. Enjoy!

travel tip

 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Travel Tip

(Keeping up your skin care regime when you travel)

Recently we went camping and this year I decided I was not taking everything I own!!  Well…I did better, but there is always next time.  One of the ways I tried to simplify was to be more organized and use containers to group like items.  Simplify, simplify is my goal, but at the same time I still like to have some of my creature comforts.

Today’s tip is how to keep up your skin care regime when you travel without taking all the stuff!

  • Soak cotton balls, one for morning and one with night, with toner and place in small ziplock snack bag or container.  I used the containers in the picture above.
  • Repeat with eye makeup remover and moisturizer
  • For my face cleanser I used some of the DIY Face Wipe  mixture from the October 28th blog post and poured it into my container over cotton rounds.

It worked like a charm!  Another option if you have cream based items is to use a pill box, one of those days of the weeks little boxes, and fill one compartment with cleanser, one with moisturizer, etc.  For example I also use a morning product and an evening product and eye treatment, this is a great way to take a little without taking all of your bottles.  If you have some leftover, no problem just use it when you get home or keep in your travel bag.

One of the biggest arguments I hear lately is that people just want to do environmentally friendly DIY projects and therefore they are not interested in Shaklee.  Shaklee is environmentally friendly in all that we do and you can still do your DIY projects with them, I know I do.  If you want more information email me at burbachulous@gmail.com.

Please note that these DIY projects are often off label and are not authorized or endorsed by Shaklee Corporation.

life shake hack

 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

What to do with all those Life Shake Canisters??

(Coffee canisters, protein canisters etc.)

Shaklee is all about the environment from our skin care to our supplements we care that not one ingredient in our products should ever harm one cell in your body or harm the environment.  Part of that commitment is also teaching us to do our part!  Whenever possible we encourage you to recycle, reuse or re-purpose containers and reduce waste!

We drink a protein shake every morning, leading to lots of canisters, but there is no need to drop them in the recycle bin, just re-purpose them.  The labels peel off easily and I have left mine white, but feel free to paint your containers to add a little jazz to your cabinets or work space!  Chalkboard type labels can be purchased from Walmart, Target, Amazon etc.

Today’s Shaklee Hack/DIY is what to do with all of those containers from your awesome Life Shake! (you can do the suggestions below with any container).

  • Canisters for your cupboard.  Put chalkboard labels on the outside making it easy to change the item you store inside.  Plus you get an added bonus of making your pantry all nice and tidy and organized!
  • Label them for the workshop with tags for nails, screws, washers, etc.
  • Use them for painting projects to pour small amounts of paint into
  • I use them for watercolor painting.  I use one for clean water and one to rinse my brushes in
  • Make a hole in the lid and put your plastic grocery bags inside and pull out through the lid
  • Use them to make your own DIY baby wipes
  • Decorate the outside wrapping with twine, paint, wall paper, glue stones on it etc. to make a nice flower pot
  • Use adhesive strips or screws to stick the bottom end (horizontally) to the wall and use as a wall organizer
  • Punch holes in the sides and use battery operated tea lights and use as luminaries
  • Store small items for camping to keep them dry
  • Donate to a pre-school, school etc. for storage containers
  • Turn into a bird feeder

For more ideas try searching Pinterest, the web etc. using search phrases like “re-purpose coffee cans” “reuse canisters”.  I’m sure there are lots of wonderful ideas out there that haven’t occurred to me yet.

There are so many creative ways to re-purpose, I’d love to hear from you.  How do you reuse your canisters?

face wipes

 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

DIY Face Wipes, Shaklee Style

Let’s face it, we can have the best face care products on the planet, and I do with Shaklee’s Enfuselle 😀 she says happily! But we all still get lazy.  At least I know I do.  It is easy to feel like skipping the face washing at the end of the day no matter how many times our mom told us it was bad for our face, I know we do! Don’t worry here are some environmentally friendly DIY  face wipes to help us out! Let’s go DIY!

  • 1 1/4 cups distilled water
  • 4-5 pumps Shaklee Enfuselle Purifying Cleansing Gel.  Try playing with the amounts, a little Enfuselle goes a long way!  (1 tbsp Castile soap or baby soap if your’re not a Shaklee user).
  • 1 drop Tea Tree essential oil – this helps your cloths not get funky, but is not required.
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or Jojoba oil.  Jojoba oil mimics our skins own sebum and is an awesome oil to try.  You may reduce the amount of oil based on skin type.
  • Baby wash cloths.  I use rags from an old T-shirt, you can use any cloth you like.

Mix ingredients well and then pour mixture over your cloths and enjoy!  Toss in the laundry after use.  These are great for travel, I will make up a mixture, drain the extra liquid and then put them in a zip lock bag; perfect for camping.  I find the mixt

ure is good for about a week.

You may follow with toner and the rest of your beauty regime if you like.  Enjoy!

library

 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

The Library of our Lives

I often imagine life to be like a vast library, one in which resides the many stories of our lives as well as spaces for the yet to be written tales. In my library there is every genre; Romance, Mystery, Horror, Short stories, Adventure and more. Some I loved and others I hated, but I keep them on my shelves because they are part of who I am. The important thing is that I have learned that once that book is finished there is no need to go back to if unless I want to, I do not have to be haunted by the horror stories or plagued by the books with poor plots, flawed story lines etc. I have closed the book and I am done with it and it will stay on my shelf taking the space it was written for, but I will let the cobwebs grow there. It’s OK, I’m done with it.

Some of the books I love to visit and remember.  I run my finger down their spines lovingly, I pull it down and smell the pages before I look at it again.  It is a special moment. These are good books. But, I keep them all.

There is a special book that I keep plot ideas in: dreams, hopes for the future, etc.  I visit this book for inspiration and to help me so that I don’t forget that life isn’t over yet. I use this book to remind me that there are more “stories” to be written, more books to come.  It is an exciting book and every time I look at it there are new things written in it.  It is important to remember to visit this book often if I wish to completely fill the shelves of my library.  Sometimes I forget about this book and I find that life becomes mundane or mediocre, then I visit my library and I’m inspired to live again and let the books be written!

I encourage you to visit your library from time to time.  Don’t be afraid of things like the horror books, you already know how it ended and it’s ok to read the last page before looking at the beginning again, and really it’s ok if you never pick up that book again as long as you remember that healthy lessons that can be pulled from them, but don’t try to destroy those books. Remember that even those books are a part of who you are and who you are is a good thing!  Maybe you need a few self helps books, that’s ok-add them in.  You won’t run out of space on your shelves.

What is on your shelves?  Are there a lot of music books?  Photography?  Maybe Football? Math? Embrace them, they are part of you and as Dr. Seuss says “Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!”.   So see? You are the best you you can be!

So, What’s your story? Share in the comments.

 tomato

Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Until we Meet Again, my Lovely Tomato

Do you remember the first bite? The warm skin touching your lips followed by the burst of cool juiciness of its tangy yet sweet flavor filling your mouth right out of the garden? Ahhh, the joy!  There is nothing like a wonderful, fresh, flavor of home grown tomato! But, alas, it is only here for a short while.

When I buy the first mealy, pale tomato each fall I feel as if I should announce that I am in mourning!  It is a sad day, but at least there are grape, roma, and cherry tomatoes to help ease my grief. So farewell my lovely tomato, until we meet again!

Fun facts about tomatoes:

  • Botanically speaking a tomato is classified as a fruit
  • In 1887 due to duty charges on vegetables and not fruits there was a hot debate over the tomatoes status and it was legally classified as a vegetable by the Supreme Court, but kept it’s botanical status
  • China is  the number one producer of tomatoes followed by USA
  • It is believed that tomatoes originated in what is modern day Peru, by the Aztecs
  •  U.S. Department of Agriculture records that Americans eat between 22- 24 pounds of tomatoes per person, per year. But over half of that is eaten as ketchup and tomato sauce
  • The Aztec name for tomato was “xitomatl,” which means “plump thing with a navel”
  • There are more than 10,000 varieties of tomato grown throughout the whole world
  •  Lycopene, an antioxidant that is good for the heart and effective against certain cancers is found in tomatoes.
  • Unlike most vegetables cooking tomatoes is better for you than eating them raw.  Cooking helps release beneficial chemicals
  •  Tomatoes are rich in vitamins A and C, calcium, potassium
  • Tomatoes seedlings have been grown in space
  • Tomatoes first appeared in America in the early 1700’s
  • Tomatoes were originally considered ornamental plants
  • Many early colonist thought tomatoes were poisonous, though still eaten by many
  • The tomato may help with constipation, depression, blood pressure, clear skin and many other health issues
  • If you are short on bees you can self pollinate your tomatoes, just put your finger in a blossom and then stick it in another and pretend to be a bee
  • 93% of American household gardeners grow tomatoes
  • The heaviest tomato according to Guinness Book of World Records was 8.41 pounds

Hopefully you still have a fresh tomato or two left in the garden, enjoy!

100 Days to Amazing!  You can do amazing things. I believe you can; you believe you can too!

What the 100 Days is about:

I was at the Shaklee Global Conference August 12-16th and we were challenged to 100 Days of Amazing with the question of what could we accomplish in 100 days if we really tried?  I was inspired by the challenge, both as a business builder who wants to grow my business in 100 days and as an individual!  What could I do in 100 days? This blog is a journey, an exercise in learning ways to be the best me, I can be and to help you be the best you, you can be while I’m at it!

Thanks for joining me on this journey!
