My Journey to 100 Days to Amazing-100

 Day 100 of Amazing

The word “Amazing” is a pretty big word, well, 7 letters and would rock in scrabble, but I mean it means more than we attribute to it.  We throw it around lightly; that meal was amazing, the movie was amazing, the awkward moment was amazing, but the word means to affect with great wonder; astonish.  From the Middle English masen, to bewilder and from Old English, amased which means to bewilder.

First, let’s look at the word “affect” in the dictionary, I know affect and effect freak us out, but let’s look anyway.  Affect is to have an influence or effect change in.  Effect is something brought about by a cause or agent.  Ok, got it?

So back to “Amazing”  to AFFECT with great wonder.  Meaning that the actions of the past 100 days of Shaklee’s 100 Days to amazing have aroused awe, astonishment, surprise or admiration in people others and most often in the individual themselves.  The result is what we call the Shaklee Effect.  To hear stories or individual’s Shaklee Effect visit Shaklee.tv under “Shaklee Effect”.

People were encouraged to really reach for new goals and strive for their best in 100 days and for many they not only did it, but far surpased their wildest expectations both in their Shaklee businesses and in their personal lives.  It has been amazing!

For me personally I learned so much about health, science, fitness, and the environment in the past 100 days and as far as my goals? Regarding my fitness goals  I have lost a few pounds and several inches, am more flexible and feel better all over.  I also have a renewed desire to make this not a “fix”, but a lifestyle of health.

Regarding my business goals in Shaklee I have had some events, sponsored a new member, had a lot of fun with people in Shaklee.  I have also stretched myself and my husband has decided to join me in our Shaklee business which has been fantastic.  We have been brainstorming ways to get out and meet people together.  I’m so excited!  Like fitness goals, deciding to grow a business isn’t something you do for just a short period of time, it is an overall mindset change and I think Van and I are making the change.

Our Shaklee Effect? One more place to connect and work together as a couple, improved health, fitness levels, and energy and increased income.  The best part is that we are learning to help other people feel better, live better, and lead healthier lives and that is amazing!

This ends the blogging in the 100 Days to Amazing, (to see what that is about scroll down) but this blog will still continue.  Subscribe to be notified of new posts and go out and be amazing!

I apologize for the lack of links above.  On a less than amazing note my laptop died today and my Iphone 4S crashed so I completed today’s blog on my Kindle.  I think this is an opportunity to see amazingness!

100 Days to Amazing!  You can do amazing things. I believe you can; you believe you can too!

What the 100 Days is about:

I was at the Shaklee Global Conference August 12-16th and we were challenged to 100 Days of Amazing with the question of what could we accomplish in 100 days if we really tried?  I was inspired by the challenge, both as a business builder who wants to grow my business in 100 days and as an individual!  What could I do in 100 days? This blog is a journey, an exercise in learning ways to be the best me, I can be and to help you be the best you, you can be while I’m at it!

Thanks for joining me on this journey!

cotton

 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Dirty Cotton

I love cotton!  I love cotton sheets, looking at fields of cotton, the crisp, clean feel- you know; as the jingle goes “the look, the feel of cotton”. But like many other things, becoming informed makes all the difference.  I still love cotton, but I will be looking for organic cotton a little harder now.  As with anything use your own judgement.  We can’t live in bubbles, but we can make wise decisions which can make our lives and environment healthier.

Here is the scoop on Cotton:

  • Cotton covers 2.5% of the world’s cultivated land
  • It accounts for 24% of the world’s insecticide market
  • Accounts for  11% of sale of global pesticides
  • This is $2.6 billion worth of pesticides making it the most pesticide-intensive crop grown on the planet
  • The World Health Organization has determined, three of the most acutely hazardous insecticides to human health rank in the top ten most commonly used in cotton production
  • These pesticides pesticides wash into the soil and into rivers and streams, where they pollute waterways and damage fragile ecosystems
  • Organic cotton is GMO free
  • Genetically engineered (also called genetically modified or GM) cotton is currently grown on 25 million hectares around the world
  • In many countries farmers reported that animals who grazed in cleared cotton fields on crop debris fell sick or died
  • Many GMO cotton plants have prevented one type of pest while others increased causing the need for more pesticides rather than a reduction
  • In some areas, such as North Carolina, when it is time for crops to be sprayed the neighboring towns suffer from watery eyes, headaches, nausea and dizziness.  It has become known as “Cotton Flu”

With this in mind I am looking at things like cotton balls, feminine products, diaper inserts etc. differently.  As a rule, I feel like I have a better chance with my clothes and linens because I launder them in non-toxic laundry detergent, but what about my face or other delicate places?  I use skin care products that protect my skin and neutralizes free radical reactions, do I want to apply it with a cotton ball that may have residue from pesticides? Even worse think of a diaper insert against your baby’s delicate places or for you ladies what about your delicate places?  I don’t want to go overboard, but It is enough to make me choose organic when I can.

Look for organic cotton fabrics, cotton balls, feminine products etc. and if you make inhalers with essential oils consider using organic inserts as a safer alternative.  Small changes can make big differences!

Enjoy the look and feel, but choose wisely!

My Journey to 100 Days to Amazing-96

alarm

 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Death to the Snooze Button

Seriously! Down with snooze!

Today’s Tip: Why not to Snooze & a little humor

Good Morning!

I would like to stand up for all the non-alarm clock, non-snooze button users!  Non-snoozers UNITE!!  Huzzah!!

Morning comes whether you set the alarm or not!  If you want to get up at 7:20 then set the alarm for 7:20!!!!!!  Not 6:30, 6:40, 6:50, 7:00, and finally 7:20!  It is a simple thing really.  REALLY!

Ya’ll know I adore my husband and he is nearly perfect, but he is a snooze button user and I am not.

This is how I wake up.  I’ll set the scene:

It is morning and the sun shines on the earth, or at least the Northwest side of Greensboro, birds begin to sing. The occasional dog barks as morning walks have begun and here we are lying snug in our bed beneath the nest of fluffy covers and I begin to stir.

The scene is set, it’s like you’re there no?

First I start to become aware of the coziness of my bed and slowly move into a conscious state of existence appreciative of the warm bed and the day ahead.  Next I stretch, not just any stretch; I stretch like a cat in the sun, full body with every fiber of my being and then let out a big satisfying sigh.  I roll over and look at the time and it is a few minutes before the time I had wished to get up and then I….wait for it…..I get up, like out of the bed, up. Sometimes I do stay there a few minutes as my mind and body wake up and contemplate the day and then I get up, as in out of bed, up!

I rarely set an alarm and if I do I usually wake up before it goes off or when it goes off I turn it OFF and then complete my routine starting with the wonderful stretch and ending with get up.  Then I wander around my house with my fuzzy socks and coffee and I am content.

Here is how my husband wakes up:

Please note: No husbands have been harmed in the writing of today’s blog. My beloved has been informed that I am using him today in this blog, but rest assured he knows he is loved deeply. Plus, he thinks I’m the one with morning issues, that and I only eat a few M&M’s at a time and he says that is “just not right”, but I digress.

Morning Scene, Take 2:

It is morning and the sun shines on the earth, or at least the Northwest side of Greensboro, birds begin to sing. The occasional dog barks as morning walks have begun and here we are lying snug in our bed beneath the nest of fluffy covers, but my husband is not aware of this morning bliss he is waiting for the signal that morning has come, the alarm.

The alarm goes off.  Most of the time my beloved responds to the sound right away and hits snooze, though not always sometimes it sings its lovely song a while, and then rolls over and hits “snooze”.  I imagine he says to himself, ah just a few more minutes…then the alarm goes off again and then he rolls over and hits “snooze”.  I imagine he says to himself, ah just a few more minutes…then the alarm goes off again and then he rolls over and hits “snooze”.  I imagine he says to himself, ah just a few more minutes…then the alarm goes off again and then he rolls over and hits “snooze”.  I imagine he says to himself, ah just a few more minutes…then the alarm goes off again and…..

Finally, the cycle ends and he begins the day.  I am not certain when he recognizes said sun, birds, and dogs, but he is up.

I tease my husband, well today, I might have fussed a little, after all he is disturbing my natural rhythms! But, he knows he is loved.

My son is the similar.  He uses his phone which has the most amazingly loud vibrate setting and his will ring and vibrate for at least an hour and often without the snooze, just ringingggggg. Sigh!

So, I ask you snoozers “What is the point of your alarm”?  I know, I know… you say that you “need it”  that you will just go back to sleep without it, but at some point you choose to get up to one of the alarms, why not the first time?

We non-snoozers who sleep with snoozers want to know “WHY THE SNOOZE?”  We want to gently glide into the day.  All we need is it to be morning and to know coffee awaits. We want to hear the morning sounds and smile and probably annoy the heck out of everyone with our cheery morning disposition. But it is our way. Death to the snooze button!! Non-Snoozers unite!! HUZZZAH!!

In all seriousness there are few good reasons that hitting that snooze button maybe isn’t the best idea:

  • During the sleep cycle, the body alternates between light sleep and deep sleep. About an hour before eyes actually open, the body begins to “reboot.” The brain sends out signals to release hormones likecortisol and adrenaline, the body temperature rises, and we enter into a lighter sleep in preparation for wake-up. So that alarm beeping or ringtone jolts us awake before the wake-up process is complete, leading to grogginess that sometimes lasts all morning. And the snooze button may only make the situation worse. – greatist.com
  • When we use snooze our body thinks the first alarm was a “false alarm” and settles in, Rafael Pelayo, MD says this takes our body and brain by surprise resulting in grogginess called sleep inertia.
  • By using snooze we get up at different times each day which throws off our internal clocks which also effects when we get sleepy, leading our bodies to be a little confused.
  • Here is a little video to help understand the process

ingenuity

 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Today’s Tip: Tips and Tricks with Everyday Items

My mother, grandmother, aunts, uncles, etc., your family, the dad from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” all of them use some weird household item for something other than its intended purpose, but you know what?  It often works!  Don’t underestimate good ole elbow grease, down home ingenuity, and old school tips and tricks.  You might just become the one squirting everyone with window cleaner!  Here are a few tips and tricks using everyday, household items:

  • Coat your lawnmower blades with solid shorting to help keep the grass from sticking to the blades and to prevent rust
  • Crushed chalk to polish marble and metal using a soft cloth to rub it
  • Make a paste using cornstarch and milk to remove ink stains in carpet.  Let dry and then vacuum
  • Clean your brass, copper, and stainless steel with a paste of lemon juice and salt
  • Having trouble sleeping? Try adding a little honey to your warm milk, honey is calming.
  • Try a little cornstarch powder paste for the “ring around the collar”
  • Want a carpet freshener without the chemicals?  Try mixing baking soda and your favorite spice or herb (stay away from things like curry that could stain).  Mix together and sprinkle on the carpet then vacuum it up!  I like lavender!
  • Can’t find your scrubby? Try balling up a piece of aluminum foil and use it as a scrubby on pots and pans.  Don’t use on non-stick surfaces.
  • Try sharpening craft scissors by making a few cuts in aluminum foil
  • Use toothpaste to remove scuff marks on shoes
  • Some toothpastes can be used to polish your silver.  Rub on like a traditional silver polish, dip in warm water and gently rub.  Buff dry with a clean, soft rag
  • Make your diamond ring sparkle by soaking in a fizzy denture cleanser solution.
  • For bee stings apply a paste of salt and water and let dry then rinse off
  • Also for bee stings apply a dab of honey to the sting
  • Mix 1 tsp of salt into 16 ounces of water then dip cotton balls or cloth rags in the solution, lie down and place on eyelids for 15 minutes to relieve puffy eyes

Happy problem solving!

I do many of these things and grew up learning about them, but admit I use Shaklee for almost everything.  Scour off, Basic H, the laundry detergent etc. all do a wonderful job so I honestly don’t think to use anything else, but is nice to know what to do just the same!

vintage

 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Retro/Vintage Homemaking

I want to start by saying hello again!  I’m afraid life has just been to busy to find a minute to blog, but we still have a few days of our Amazing Journey left and I want to invite you to finish strong with me!  Today’s tip is a reminder to keep it simple, and don’t forget what our mothers and grandmothers learned.

I love old cookbooks and pamphlets and I love finding old booklets like the ones in the picture above.  Some of my favorites are from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the little books put out by companies like Presto, Calumet Baking Powder and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company .  There are two things I enjoy about them and they contradict each other! No. 1. Outdated, ridiculous housekeeping tips. So funny, seriously, I am not going to put on my lipstick and heels and meet my husband at the door with a mixed drink, a fire, and his newspaper thus ensuring a happy home. (Well, unless we are home alone and well hey…they said heels, the didn’t mention anything else! eh-ehm)  and  no.2. There are great tips, recipes, housekeeping tips and encouragement that are really worth following; things that simplify housework, help prepare healthy meals, and yes…even tips on a happy home – outside of number 1.

I’d like to give a shout out to all the hipsters out there who are bringing DIY, homemade meals, and old school housekeeping back in vogue!!! Thank you!  These books combined with the added “vintage thing” will be right up your alley! Enjoy!

Here are some tid-bits from my little booklets. You may decide whether they fall under no. 1 or no. 2.  Some things have not changed that much :

Rumford Baking Powder and the Department of Home Economics (No date is given)

  • Money Spent on kitchen equipment may not show as much as in other parts of the house but it will give a direct return in health and comfort to all the family.
  • If you want to lighten your work find out how much you travel in doing just one kitchen task.  To do this make a map of the route and distance of your travel in making a simple cake…It is now a simple matter to estimate the total amount of travel required to perform this one task.  The result will show you where you can shorten routes and save steps.
  • Do not wrap your ice in the icebox for it is on the melting of the ice that the efficiency of the refrigerator depends

Metropolitan Life Insurance Company 1964

  • There is nothing like a hot bread to dress up a plain meal…it is no trouble at all to serve these welcome treats as often as you like.
  • A pretty or unusual garnish gives a plain bowl of soup a party air.
  • Have you noticed what a change the last few years have seen in men’s liking for salad?  They even like to make salads, especially a mixed green salad, chef’s salad, or Caesar salad!  This is progress, bcause salads add health and not inches!

Family fare, food management and recipes Home and Garden Bulletin No. 1 – U.S. Department of Agriculture -1950 and 1960

  • For the body’s energy in work and play, fuel must come from food…Your needs for food depend mainly on two things: the size of your body and how active you are…If your body weight stays about right for your height and build it’s a sign that fuel intake from food matches your needs.  The calories are taking care of themselves.
  • The golden protein dishes made with eggs and choices when meat, poultry, and fish take a holiday from your table.  Beans too have substantial goodness for main dishes plus special virtue of economy.
  • To get all the nutrients needed, it’s wise to choose a variety of foods – but a well-planned variety.  You will be off to a good start nutritionally if you use a food plan.
  • Serving size 1960
    • Meat with no bone – 1/5 to 1/4 pound per person
    • Poultry – Broiling chicken: 1/4 – 1/2 bird
    • Fish fillets – 1/3 pound
    • Vegetables and Fruit – 1/2 cup
    • Cereals and Cereal products – 1/2 cup
  • Sugar Information Inc. – Canning can be a chore, but if you tackle it sensibly you’ll find it’s lots of fun too.  There’s a nice feeling of security in having a well-filled pantry, and a sens of achievement in doing the work yourself.
  • Southern Living 1976 – Try basting your lamb with coffee it gives the lamb a subtle and delicious flavor
  • General Foods Corporation 1933
    • It is a wise woman who knows her baking rules
    • Even the small house is able to accommodate a number of luncheon guests if the menu is planned so that it may be served on card tables.  And very smart it is to give a bridge luncheon this way.
    • You can gain command of the art of baking through the mastery of a few recipes!

I think the lesson from these old booklets is to put joy into your home, family and guests and do it with pride whether you are a housewife, househusband, or employed outside the home make home a place of comfort and joy to all who enter your doors!

stain spray

 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Effective, Frugal and Convenient Stain Spray

Today’s post is just a quick tip to make your life a little easier in the laundry room.  Spray on Stain remover!

We have made the decision to be a single income family which allows me to be available for our kids, grandkids, to care for our home, be available to volunteer, speak etc.,  buuut, those things pay in non-monetary ways and are worth it all!  In order to make it work I’m always looking for ways to stretch things and I love an organized home and I’m always looking for a great new way to do something and when I can combine them, wooot, wooot!

I use Shaklee Fresh Laundry Concentrate – Liquid and it is an amazing stain remover when applied straight, just a few drops from the bottle, but, you can make yourself a spray too and save some pennies! (I also use the powder Conentrate, because I like it too!)  Remember that in all of my posts I try to make it so that you can use other products, so if you don’t use Shaklee you can adjust it.

I use 1, 2 ounce spray bottle (from amazon)

1 ounce distilled water

1 ounce liquid laundry detergent

Shake well and spray on the problem area!  It is safe to leave until your next load of laundry too, so I leave a bottle handy and spray it on our messes, toss it and forget about!

Shaklee Fresh Laundry Concentrate when used as a stain remover is 46% more effective than OxiClean® Versatile Stain Remover and 21% better than Resolve®Laundry Pre-Treater 2X Concentrated and when used as a liquid laundry concentrate comparable to Method® 8X Laundry Detergent, All® Small & Mighty® free clear laundry detergent and Whole Foods® 2X concentrate Laundry Detergent.

and like all Shaklee products it is safe, powerful, and green!

My Journey to 100 Days to Amazing-81

thanful thursday

 Today’s tip for Amazingness:

Thankful Thursday!

Last night I was in a meeting where we were asked to remember what things we are thankful for in Shaklee.  We were also reminded that we do what we do, for others, that not one penny is earned that first another person is made to feel better.  I’m thankful for these reminders.

As I contemplated the question regarding my thankfulness I realized that I am thankful for much because of Shaklee.

I am thankful for:

  • The wonderful people I have met who share their love, knowledge, and selves so fully
  • The education I receive daily regarding eating well, exercise, caring for my self
  • The education I receive about the importance of caring for our environment, how to be green, how to be safe and reduce our exposure to toxins
  • The science and research that goes into everything about Shaklee
  • That the products all do the things they say they do
  • That people’s lives are changed every single day because of Shaklee and I get to be a part of that
  • For learning and always being reminded to put others first and business second
  • That Shaklee distributors are unusually happy, friendly, helpful, healthy, and satisfied people
  • For an opportunity to help provide for our family
  • I’m thankful to get to share this with my husband
  • For the Shaklee Bill of rights and the fact that people really act that way.

At Shaklee, every human has the inalienable right…

To unleash their full human potential

To thrive, not just survive

To take control of their destiny

To be part of a supportive, encouraging community

To be recognized for their accomplishments

To make an impact on themselves, their family, and community

To live free of toxins and stress

To live younger, longer

To experience the world

To give back

I am thankful that these aren’t just Shaklee lessons, but life lessons and that is amazing!
