Today’s Tip: Why not to Snooze & a little humor
I would like to stand up for all the non-alarm clock, non-snooze button users! Non-snoozers UNITE!! Huzzah!!
Morning comes whether you set the alarm or not! If you want to get up at 7:20 then set the alarm for 7:20!!!!!! Not 6:30, 6:40, 6:50, 7:00, and finally 7:20! It is a simple thing really. REALLY!
Ya’ll know I adore my husband and he is nearly perfect, but he is a snooze button user and I am not.
This is how I wake up. I’ll set the scene:
It is morning and the sun shines on the earth, or at least the Northwest side of Greensboro, birds begin to sing. The occasional dog barks as morning walks have begun and here we are lying snug in our bed beneath the nest of fluffy covers and I begin to stir.
The scene is set, it’s like you’re there no?
First I start to become aware of the coziness of my bed and slowly move into a conscious state of existence appreciative of the warm bed and the day ahead. Next I stretch, not just any stretch; I stretch like a cat in the sun, full body with every fiber of my being and then let out a big satisfying sigh. I roll over and look at the time and it is a few minutes before the time I had wished to get up and then I….wait for it…..I get up, like out of the bed, up. Sometimes I do stay there a few minutes as my mind and body wake up and contemplate the day and then I get up, as in out of bed, up!
I rarely set an alarm and if I do I usually wake up before it goes off or when it goes off I turn it OFF and then complete my routine starting with the wonderful stretch and ending with get up. Then I wander around my house with my fuzzy socks and coffee and I am content.
Here is how my husband wakes up:
Please note: No husbands have been harmed in the writing of today’s blog. My beloved has been informed that I am using him today in this blog, but rest assured he knows he is loved deeply. Plus, he thinks I’m the one with morning issues, that and I only eat a few M&M’s at a time and he says that is “just not right”, but I digress.
Morning Scene, Take 2:

The alarm goes off. Most of the time my beloved responds to the sound right away and hits snooze, though not always sometimes it sings its lovely song a while, and then rolls over and hits “snooze”. I imagine he says to himself, ah just a few more minutes…then the alarm goes off again and then he rolls over and hits “snooze”. I imagine he says to himself, ah just a few more minutes…then the alarm goes off again and then he rolls over and hits “snooze”. I imagine he says to himself, ah just a few more minutes…then the alarm goes off again and then he rolls over and hits “snooze”. I imagine he says to himself, ah just a few more minutes…then the alarm goes off again and…..
Finally, the cycle ends and he begins the day. I am not certain when he recognizes said sun, birds, and dogs, but he is up.
I tease my husband, well today, I might have fussed a little, after all he is disturbing my natural rhythms! But, he knows he is loved.
My son is the similar. He uses his phone which has the most amazingly loud vibrate setting and his will ring and vibrate for at least an hour and often without the snooze, just ringingggggg. Sigh!
So, I ask you snoozers “What is the point of your alarm”? I know, I know… you say that you “need it” that you will just go back to sleep without it, but at some point you choose to get up to one of the alarms, why not the first time?
We non-snoozers who sleep with snoozers want to know “WHY THE SNOOZE?” We want to gently glide into the day. All we need is it to be morning and to know coffee awaits. We want to hear the morning sounds and smile and probably annoy the heck out of everyone with our cheery morning disposition. But it is our way. Death to the snooze button!! Non-Snoozers unite!! HUZZZAH!!
In all seriousness there are few good reasons that hitting that snooze button maybe isn’t the best idea:
- During the sleep cycle, the body alternates between light sleep and deep sleep. About an hour before eyes actually open, the body begins to “reboot.” The brain sends out signals to release hormones likecortisol and adrenaline, the body temperature rises, and we enter into a lighter sleep in preparation for wake-up. So that alarm beeping or ringtone jolts us awake before the wake-up process is complete, leading to grogginess that sometimes lasts all morning. And the snooze button may only make the situation worse. – greatist.com
- When we use snooze our body thinks the first alarm was a “false alarm” and settles in, Rafael Pelayo, MD says this takes our body and brain by surprise resulting in grogginess called sleep inertia.
- By using snooze we get up at different times each day which throws off our internal clocks which also effects when we get sleepy, leading our bodies to be a little confused.
